Public Lecture: Industrial Revolution 4.0

Two distinct areas of discussion emerge when considering the societal revolution and the industrial revolution. The first concerns how humans adapt to survive, transitioning from hunting to the information era and the development of a smart society. The second focuses on the evolution of goods production, from mechanization and mass production to automation and cyber production. However, both ultimately lead to a condition where humans integrate technology into every aspect of their lives.

Particularly in the economic realm, the shift in human reliance on technology has spurred the rise of a new economic sector, known as the digital economy. This is characterized by the proliferation of startups that are reshaping the way people engage in transactions, spanning e-commerce, logistics, transportation, travel agencies, education, payments, investments, banking, capital markets, and health services. Undeniably, Industrial Revolution 4.0 is advancing at an exponential pace and significantly impacting human life, thus necessitating an optimistic outlook for Indonesia's digital economic ecosystem as it confronts these changes.

The material was presented by Prof. Dr. Sri Adiningsih, SE., M.Sc., Chair of the Presidential Advisory Council of the Republic of Indonesia and also a Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business, UGM. This presentation took place at the Public Lecture of the Islamic Economics Study Program, FEBI, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on October 3, 2019, at the 5th Floor Auditorium of FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The event was attended by the Dean of FEBI Dr. H. Syafiq Mahmadah Hanafi, M.Ag., Vice Deans I and III of FEBI, the Heads of Study Programs and Lecturers, as well as students of FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.

Sri Adiningsih emphasized the importance of cultivating productive and creative human resources to confront the challenges of the industrial revolution 4.0. She highlighted the pivotal role of students as crucial instruments in preparing human resources for the future. Sri Adiningsih also stressed the necessity for campuses to advance knowledge rooted in digital technology, enabling access to extensive information and fostering broad thinking. This, she argued, would establish a robust foundation for progressing towards society revolution 5.0, characterized by the emergence of a super smart society.

The public lecture, moderated by Achmad Nurdany SEI., SE., MEK., delved into the highly relevant theme of the Digital Economy, a new paradigm for the Indonesian economy. Sri Adiningsih expressed optimism about the rapid development of Indonesia's digital economic ecosystem. This is supported by the infrastructure development system consisting of an electrification ratio of more than 90 percent, internet penetration of more than 50 percent, the construction of the Palapa Ring project, and favorable regulations. The material presented at the public lecture garnered a positive response and tremendous enthusiasm from the participants, both from students and lecturers of FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
