Philippines (18/11) – The Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI) UIN Sunan Kalijaga actively participated in the prestigious international event, the 12th ASEAN International Conference on Islamic Finance (AICIF) 2024. This year, the conference was hosted by Mindanao State University in the Philippines, under the theme “Islamic Finance for Sustainable Peace and Development: Challenges and Opportunities”. FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga not only attended as a participant but also played a significant role as one of the co-hosts alongside other renowned institutions, such as International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang, University of Darussalam Gontor, and UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This annual conference serves as an academic and professional forum for sharing ideas, research findings, and solutions related to global issues in Islamic Economics and Finance, particularly in the Southeast Asian region.

The two-day event, held on November 18-19, 2024, at Limketkai Luxe Hotel in Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines, featured plenary and parallel sessions. During the plenary sessions, speakers from various countries and leading organizations presented current issues related to the development of Islamic Economics and Finance on the international stage. Meanwhile, the Parallel Sessions provided a platform for researchers to present their findings, highlighting the contributions of Islamic Economics and Finance to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as financial inclusion, poverty alleviation, and social and environmental issues in the digital era.

A total of 8 rigorously selected articles represented FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga and were presented at the 12th AICIF through a hybrid scheme. Two FEBI lecturers, Prof. Dr. Misnen Ardiansyah, S.E., M.Si., Ak., C.A., ACPA (Dean of FEBI), and Dr. M. Ghafur Wibowo, S.E., M.Sc., had the opportunity to present their research in person in the Philippines. Prof. Misnen’s research focused on risk mitigation in Islamic banking, entitled “Moderation of Islamic Corporate Governance and the Quality of Environmental Disclosure in Relation to the Application of Accounting Conservatism in Mitigating the Risk of Islamic Banking to Face Global Economic Crisis”. Meanwhile, Dr. Ghafur emphasized the role of institutions in global warming mitigation, with his research entitled “The Moderation Role of the Quality Institution on the Environment in the Era of Global Warming Mitigation: Evidence from Muslim Countries”.

In addition to attending the conference, the FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga delegation also utilized this opportunity to conduct community service in the Muslim community of Cagayan de Oro. They visited several historic mosques to share insights on Islamic preaching (da’wah) and discussed halal supply chain management with certified halal Muslim restaurant owners. This visit underscored FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s tangible contributions to fostering synergy between education, research, and community service at the international level.
